The Game
Story
Wow.
What a game! (AGAIN!)
The
West Morris Wolfpack achieved an historic feat today, winning the school’s first ever Lacrosse
State Championship with a heart stopping win over Defending Champion Ramapo, 8-7.
Once again, the ‘pack proved that teamwork wins games. John Williams led the offensive effort with
3 goals, while teammates Brett Bononno and Scott Thurber scored two, and Tyler Berntsen added one. Evan
Guarini had all of the team’s assists with three.
Tore Carfaro
played through the pain and helped get possession. The defensive team of Mark Toppel, Scott Delaney, Nikko
Malley, Matt Bowers, Matt Goodyear and Kevin Jordan turned up the heat in the second half, effectively shutting down the Ramapo
offense. Jeremy Dowiak was solid in goal, making some difficult stops to preserve the win.
The
first quarter was back and forth, with West Morris leading holding on to a 2-1 lead as the period ended. In
the second, Ramapo came to life and outscored the Wolfpack 4-0 to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
But the third period was all PACK, outscoring Ramapo 5-1 to take a 7-6 lead into the final period. Then
the nail biting began…although the Wolfpack scored a cushion goal to extend their lead to two goals, Ramapo wouldn’t
go away easy. They scored to get within one, and had possession with 20 seconds left. The
defense shut down the final threat as time ran out, and West Morris were CHAMPIONS.
Congratulations to the entire Wolfpack organization,
but particularly to the seniors. Rings and banners, boys, rings and banners…..
